About Jim Corbett National Park

Edward James Corbett was a British hunter turned naturalist & author in Nainital,India, a foothills of the Himalaya.He was born in Nainital. He was an Enthusiastic wanderer,fond of hunting and exploring forests. 

He was famous because he freed local villagers from man eater tiger and leopard mainly in the region where present Jim Corbett national park is now i.e. Jim Corbett. 

Jim Corbett was a naturalist. He also played the lead role and made an effort to save wildlife reserves. 

In 1936 Halley National Park was established,1956 it was known as Ramganga National Park But In 1957 name  was changed to Jim Corbett National Park to honour James Corbett after his death. 

Corbett National Park in India located in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand state .The first national park in India .Corbett National Park spread in 1288.31sq kms approx covering Hills and river area,grassland,flora and fauna and many species of plants,mammal,reptile,famous for world’s highest number of tigers.Now It is a famous Corbett Tiger Reserve & well known for Corbett Safari including various safari zone like Dhikala,Bijrani,Jhirna,Durga Devi,Dhela. 

Flora & Fauna

Jim Corbett National Park located in District Nainital,Uttarakhand, India. It is known for its flora and fauna.The variety of plants and animal life makes Jim Corbett National Park an Important conservation area and a popular destination. 

Flora

More than 600 species of trees,shrubs,herbs,bamboo,grasses,vines and ferns. 

  • Dominant forest type: dense moist deciduous forests with Sal trees. 
  • Tree Species:Mango,Haldu,Khair,Sissoo,Peepal,Rohini,Kachnar and Chir at high altitude. 
  • Shrubs: commonly Karaunda,Maror Phali,Ber etc 
  • Flowering Trees:Naturally occurring trees like Kachnar,Semal,Dhak,Amaltas,Madaar etc. 
  • Grasses: Over 70 species found specially in grassland like Kansi,spear grass,Tiger grass,Khus Khus etc.

  • Mammals – Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand, India is a habitat to a diverse population of mammals including dense forest, grassland and riverine areas. Please Find a brief introduction.

    • Large Predators: Bengal Tiger and Leopard. Jim Corbett National Park is famous for its Bengal Tigers. The density of tiger population in Corbett is highest in India. India is home to the largest population of Tiger in the world. It is the first National park of India under India’s Tiger Project. Leopards are often seen in Hilly areas or low land areas of Jim Corbett National Park.

    • Elephants: Asian Elephant. Elephants are often seen in Dhikala zone, Jhirna zone, Dhela zone, Sitabani forest area but mostly during summer time.

    • Deer: There are Four species of deer in Jim Corbett National Park Chital, Sambhar, Hog Deer and Barking Deer.

    • Other Mammals: Sloth Beer, Wild boar, Mangoose, Cat species, Langur and Rhesus Macaque. It is very challenging to spot Sloth beer because of its shy nature. Wild boar, Langur can be seen in the entire Jim Corbett National Park area. Mangoose small Predators are the smaller mammals also found in Jim Corbett National Park. Rhesus Macaque monkeys are social creature and found easily in Corbett National Park.

  • Birds – Home to over 600 species, crested serpent Eagle, Indian Paradise Flycatcher, Red Jungle Fowl etc. There are 586 species of resident and migratory birds in Jim Corbett National Park. Kosi Barrage, Sitabani, Haathi Dangar, Garjiya are famous for birdwatching.

  • Reptiles – Gharial, Marsh Crocodile, King Cobra, Indian Python

  • Amphibians – Frogs, Toads, Salamanders are found in water bodies

  • Fish – Mahseer, Goonch

Corbett Rivers

There are several Important rivers and streams in the surrounding area of Jim Corbett National Park.There is an important role of the rivers and streams  for the survival of the Flora and Fauna species in Jim Corbett National Park. These rivers and their tributaries are important to the health of biodiversity and Jim Corbett National Park.

Ramganga River

It is the largest perennial waterbody & lifeline of Corbett national park.Home of Fauna species like Mahseer fish,gharial,crocodile,turtle,otters,variety of birds, kingfisher etc. 

Kosi River

Kosi River is also a perennial river, it flows parallel along with the park from Kumeria to Mohan-Dhikuli-Ramnagar in eastern periphery. During monsoon the Kosi is challenging rapid, a destination for white water rafting. Kosi is also an attraction migratory birds. Kosi has steep cliffs where you can get a chance to see goral, like goat, grazing nearby precipitous slope. Kosi river is the life line of the town Ramnagar also.

Sonanadi River

It flows through the Sonanadi wild life sanctuary adjoins Corbett national park which is a part of Corbett tiger reserve. This river is the tributary of Ramganga River. Sonandi means “River of Gold”. Gold was extracted in the past from this river.

Mandal River

Mandal River is also a tributary of Ramganga river. It flows from the eastern to western part of the Corbett national park and in monsoon it turns into a furious torrent and it is breeding place for Mahseer.

Palain River

A 3rd important tributary of Ramganga river. Enters the park from the North. Join Ramganga approx 3 kms north of the submerged settlement of Boxar at Ramganga reservoir.

Sots (A Stream)

There are many seasonal streams in the park called Sots locally. Some Sots are important in dry periods in which water gets collected and is used by wild animals of the park for drinking.A 3rd important tributary of Ramganga river. Enters the park from the North. Join Ramganga approx 3 kms north of the submerged settlement of Boxar at Ramganga reservoir.
